The Committee of Federal Polytechnic Rectors (COFER) has called for a review of the newly launched Polytechnic Scheme of Service. This position is an outcome of their meeting held at Veterinary Medical Council in Abuja on July 3, 2024.
A letter written by the body to the Excecutive Secretary, NBTE, identified key areas that need urgent remedy.
COFER observed that while it takes a graduate 18 years to become a Professor, 20 years to become a Chief Lecturer in college of education, it will take 26 years to become a Chief Lecturer in the polytechnic sector.
COFER posited that a Chief Lecturer should have one level ahead of non teaching counterpart as professors enjoy in the university system.
The rectors also observed that there is no entry provision for holders of HND in the registry, bursary, library and others cadres.
Some aspects of the scheme, COFER identified, worsened the issue of dichotomy capable of further affecting students' enrolment in the polytechnic sector.
COFER also picked holes in the process of appointment of Registrar and Bursar as the new scheme contradicts the provisions of Federal Polytechnic Act 2019 as amended.
Recall that Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) stated that the new scheme of service as a document further undermines the polytechnic education and also promotes the age-long disparity and discrimination against its products with that of university education in the country.
